ALARA-BALT 2020 Australasian Conference
The ALAR_BALT Conference preparations continue as before. As this conference is not for eight months (early November), ALARA is confident the current crisis over the COVID-19 pandemic will have ended. The call for submission of proposals for the conference continues. The conference theme is Discovering the Future Together: Action Learning and Action Research at Work. Details about the streams are available here. Registrations will now open in April.
The Organising Committee is finalising site visits on Wednesday 11 November, so the conference dates are likely to be extended: 8th to 11th November 2020. The Committee is also negotiating with sites for a Doctoral Workshop, which will include a virtual link-up for action research doctoral students to share learnings. More information in coming weeks.
If you would like to help review submissions for the conference, please contact Chivonne Algeo, ALARA's Vice-President Australasia.
For more information, please see the conference web page.

Global Evaluative Study of Action Research Presentation - 6 May 2020
Several of the members of the ESAR research team live in countries other than Australia. With the recently imposed self-isolation rules in Australia and other countries, these presenters may not be able to attend the event on 6 May. The team are holding a video-conference meeting later this week to determine how best to conduct the event - possibly a video conference from several locations or deferring the event to later in the year. Further information will be provided in next e-News.

Brisbane ALARA Conversation - Radical Placemaking
The Brisbane Conversations events have been suspended for the time being. This decision is in keeping with several health authorities' recommendations to not have large gatherings, or to risk infection amongst the elderly. Once the emergency stabilises, the Brisbane Group will announce the next Conversation.

Additional Name for ALARA
Many members may be aware that the acronym that Action Learning, Action Research Association Ltd uses - ALARA - is very well known, but is also the same word that has been used (currently or previously) in 70 organisations and business names in Australia (Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) website). Names closest to the ALARA acronym are ALARA Pty Ltd, ALARA US Pty Ltd, ALARA & Co Pty Ltd and ALARA QLD Ltd.
To avoid confusion, the Board has registered the business name ALAR Association, which is the same as our web site address. While ALARA will still be widely used, you will progressively see the introduction of "ALAR Association" in more formal communications.

Update on Strategic Plan
The Board has held several meetings over the last 6-8 months developing a draft strategic plan for ALARA. Members will receive an email in the next fortnight inviting them to review the draft plan and provide input and suggestions.
The draft plan aims to continue and grow current activities, as well as commence some new activities. Naturally, the Board welcome any ideas and assistance in developing both the current and future activities of ALARA.

ALARA Publications for Purchase
As part of its search for a new print-on-demand service (see below), ALARA undertook a stocktake of publications, which revealed a small number of journals, monographs and other publications that are now available for sale.
These publications are available for purchase at $40.00 for a Journal, $20.00 for a Monograph and $60.00 for a book, such as the World Congress Proceedings (Australian dollars in all cases). These rates include standard postage, which is a saving over purchasing directly from a print-on-demand service. Faster postage is available at an additional cost.
The list of publications and the process for purchasing them can be found on the ALARA website.

Printing of ALARA publications
Early in 2019, Sydney University Press (SUP), who had been printing ALARA publications for several years, advised that they had to stop that service. The University had directed SUP to concentrate on University-generated publications. In about June 2019, ALARA's publications were removed from SUP's site.
For most of 2019, ALARA has been seeking a replacement printing service. The Board has agreed on the following arrangements.
- For newly printed copies of the Action Learning and Action Research Journal and ALARA Monograph series, ALARA has arranged for Ingram Spark to produce and post copies on a print-on-demand basis. Ingram Spark is a worldwide distributor for publications. It can arrange for ALARA's publications to be available through online book distributors, including Amazon (these distributors have to decide to take on the publications, so we will have to wait to see if any decide to provide ALARA publications).
These printed versions will become available during the next month or so, and we will provide more details as they become available.
- Previously printed copies of some of the issues of the Action Learning and Action Research Journal are available now. Please see the item above.
- Electronic copies of the Action Learning and Action Research Journal are available through several methods.
- Individual articles of the Action Learning and Action Research Journal are available to members via the Journal website.
- ALARA supplies copies of the Action Learning and Action Research Journal to Informit and EBSCO for loading in their search sites, where the public can access individual articles. Members can access the Informit site free of charge after logging into the ALARA site - more details here.
- ALARA loads the entire issue of each Action Learning and Action Research Journal on its website, and members can access all issues, while the public can access all but the last twelve months of publications.
- ALARA also loads the Monographs on its website, again with a restriction for the last twelve months.
