United Nations Grants ALARA Special Consultative Status
In June this year, Action Learning, Action Research Association Ltd received notification about its application to seek consultative status with the United Nations. The notification said the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations had recommended ALARA for consultative status, but that the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) would need to confirm the recommendation.
The ECOSOC has now confirmed that it has granted special consultative status to ALARA.
Consultative status for an organization enables it to engage in a number of ways with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, the Human Rights Council and, under specific conditions, some meetings of the General Assembly and other intergovernmental bodies. These ways include:
- Attendance at meetings and access to the United Nations
- Written statements at ECOSOC
- Oral presentations at ECOSOC
- Consultations with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies
When time permits, ALARA will seek the input of members to assist with these matters. We state "time permits", because some requests come with minimal notice (we hope this situation will change, now that ALARA has been granted consultative status).
If you have any questions about ALARA's involvement in the ECOSOC, please email admin[at]alarassociaiton.org.
The ALARA Board thank Dr Winston Jacob for his assistance and guidance during the application process.
